How to Use Sambrani Cups (Dhoop) Safely at Home
Sambrani (dhoop) is traditionally burned during puja, havan and meditation for its warm, resinous fragrance. Sambrani cups make this easy and need no charcoal.
What you need
- A Sambrani cup from a pack such as our Sambrani Cups (Guggal and Loban)
- A heat-safe holder: a ceramic loban holder or wooden burner
- A lighter or matchstick
- A flat, stable surface away from curtains and paper
How to light a cup
- Place one cup upright in the holder.
- Light the top edge of the cup until it catches.
- Let it burn for about 10 to 20 seconds, then gently blow out the flame.
- The cup will keep smouldering and releasing fragrant smoke.
- Carry the holder carefully, or rest it in front of your altar.
Safety tips
- Use in a ventilated room and never leave burning dhoop unattended.
- Keep away from children, pets and anything flammable.
- People with asthma or breathing sensitivity should be cautious with any smoke.
- Let the holder cool fully before cleaning.
Putting it out and storing
Once the smoke stops the cup is spent. To stop one early, press it into a bowl of sand or ash. Store unused cups in a cool, dry place in their box so they stay dry.
