How to Dilute Essential Oils and Do a Patch Test
Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts. Used neat, many of them can irritate or sensitise skin. Diluting them in a carrier oil is the single most important safety step.
Why dilution matters
A carrier oil spreads the essential oil over a larger area, slows absorption and lowers the chance of irritation. Good carriers include jojoba, coconut, sweet almond and argan oil.
Simple dilution chart
About 20 drops of essential oil equal roughly 1 mL. These amounts are for adults on healthy skin.
| Use | Dilution | Drops per 15 mL (1 tbsp) carrier |
|---|---|---|
| Face, sensitive skin | 0.5 to 1% | 2 to 3 |
| Scalp and body | 1 to 2% | 3 to 6 |
| Short-term spot use | up to 3% | up to 9 |
For children, older adults, pregnancy and any medical condition, ask a doctor or qualified aromatherapist before using essential oils.
How to patch test
- Dilute the oil as above.
- Apply a small amount to the inner forearm.
- Cover it loosely and leave it for 24 hours without washing the spot.
- Check the area. Redness, itching, burning or a rash means stop and do not use that oil.
If you react
Wash the area with plain carrier oil first (not water), then with mild soap. Seek medical help if swelling spreads or breathing is affected.
Good habits
- Keep oils away from eyes, mouth and broken skin.
- Store in a cool, dark place with the cap closed.
- Essential oils are for external or aroma use only. Do not swallow them.
